More Than Just a Postal Code: Why Parkdale Will Always Be Our "First Home" in Canada

Real estate isn't just about square footage, split-levels, or bunglows. It’s about the feeling you get when you turn onto your street.

As a real estate agent in Brandon, I sell homes all over this beautiful city. But whenever I drive down Parkdale Drive or pass the Parkdale Community Park, I feel a different kind of pull. Parkdale isn't just territory to me. It’s where my family bought our very first home in Canada.

We lived in the heart of Parkdale from 2015 to 2020, and those five years shaped how we view this city. If you are currently living in Parkdale and thinking of selling, I want to share why your neighbourhood holds such tremendous value—not just historically, but emotionally—to the buyers looking today.

Our First Canadian Welcome

Moving to a new country is daunting. Buying your first home there is even more so. We chose Parkdale because even then, it felt established and safe. But what we didn't expect was the overwhelming warmth of the community.

It was the neighbours who brought over snowblowers without being asked after a heavy snowfall, or other neighbours who treated our kids like the ones of their own. It was the waves hello across the wide lawns that defined the 1970s design of the area. It was the genuine sense that people looked out for one another.

For families, Parkdale is pure gold. Our time there was defined by proximity. Having the beautiful Parkdale Park and its legendary toboggan hill just steps away meant our kids always had somewhere to burn off energy. Being just steps away from an excellent school like Linden Lanes meant the morning commute was often just a pleasant walk.

When you live there, you take it for granted. When you leave, you realize how special that environment is.

History You Can Feel

Why does Parkdale have this vibe? It was designed that way.

Before living there, I didn't appreciate the history. The area was largely developed in 1976 by Duncan Grierson and Parkdale Builders. It wasn't slapped together; it was a planned suburban vision designed for growing families during Brandon's major southward expansion.

They included wider streets, curvilinear roads to slow down traffic, and solid, well-built homes.

Today, the result of that 1970s vision is a neighbourhood with a mature tree canopy that new subdivisions just can't match yet. When buyers look at Parkdale today, they see stability.

Why Sellers in Parkdale Are in a Unique Position Right Now

If you are living in Parkdale now, you are sitting on something many buyers are desperately looking for.

When I talk to young families or newcomers looking to buy in Brandon today, they often describe exactly what you already have. They want the solid construction of those mid-century bungalows.

They want the big trees. They want the friendly, "kids-playing-in-the-street" atmosphere that we enjoyed from 2015-2020.

The demand for established, safe, family-oriented neighbourhoods in South Brandon is incredibly high.

As a former resident, I know I’m biased, but I truly believe Parkdale is one of the best pockets in Westman.

When I sell a home in this area, I’m not just selling the features listed on the MLS. I’m selling the lifestyle. I’m selling the kind neighbours, the proximity to the toboggan hill, and the feeling of finding your "first home."

Are you thinking of making a move?

It’s a big decision to leave a neighbourhood as welcoming as this one. But if the time is right for your family to downsize or move on, you should know the true value of what you own.

Because I lived there, I know how to market the unique magic of Parkdale to the next generation of buyers.

Let’s sit down for a coffee and chat about your home.
